Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

MICS or Keyhole Heart surgery is the most advanced form of cardiac surgery that involves making small incisions on the left or ride side of the chest to treat a range of heart problems.

Pacemaker Implantation

A pacemaker is an electronic device implanted in the chest and designed to generate electric impulses when the sinoatrial node, i.e., the heart’s natural pacemaker, does not function well. This is a surgical procedure performed on patients diagnosed with heart rhythm disorders, people who’ve recently suffered a heart attack or cardiac arrest, and even those diagnosed with a heart block. The pacemaker wires are placed in the veins that directly lead to the heart, while the other end of the wires is attached to the generator. The process takes 2 to 3 hours under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the patient’s specific health conditions.
An average pacemaker battery lasts anywhere from 5 to 15 years, following which the physician will discuss the need for replacement. However, it must be adjusted to match changes in your health condition or lifestyle changes.

Deep Vein Thrombosis Treatment

DVT is a blood clot formed in the deep veins in the body, usually the legs. It is generally observed in people over 60 but could occur at any age. Risk factors include accident injury, surgery, immune response, obesity, smoking, heart failure, and even inflammation.
Symptoms of deep vein thrombosis include blood clots in the leg, pain and swelling in the leg, skin turning red or discoloured, pain while breathing deep, rapid heartbeat, and spitting blood while coughing.
Deep vein thrombosis is diagnosed through various tests, including duplex venous ultrasound, venography, MRI, and CT. Treatment includes medications, viz., anticoagulants, thrombin inhibitors, and thrombolytics, wearing compression stockings, and even surgical intervention. We treat and help patients manage DVT through patient education and counselling.

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

CABG, commonly called heart bypass surgery, is a procedure to treat coronary artery diseases(CAD). The arteries that supply blood to the heart could narrow down or harden due to the build-up of fatty deposits or plaques, putting you at risk of developing CAD. When oxygen-rich blood flow is restricted to the heart, the patient develops chest pain, also called angina. As the name suggests, the blocked portion of the artery is bypassed with a healthy blood vessel from elsewhere in the body. If angina cannot be treated with medications, the patient may need bypass graft surgery. The new blood vessel is called a graft, and the number of grafts depends on the severity of the heart disease. CABG is suggested for patients with symptoms like chest pain, fatigue, irregular heart rhythm, shortness of breath, swelling in the hands and feet, indigestion, etc.

Atrial Septal Defect Surgery

Atrial septal defect refers to a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the two chambers of the heart (atria). This is a congenital defect affecting around one in four infants in India. If the opening is small, it may not cause any problems. But if the hole is large or abnormal, the child may need surgery to prevent long-term damage to the lung blood vessels. Atrial Septal Defect surgery or ASD is an open-heart surgery that must be performed early in childhood to help the child have a better quality of life. However, in some situations, ASD surgery is also performed in adults. The procedure can be done in two ways: catheter-based repair and open-heart surgery. A catheter-based surgery is used only on secundum type of atrial septal defects, while the latter is used to fix primum, sinus venosus, and coronary sinus atrial defects.

Aortic Surgery

Aortic aneurysm refers to a bulge in the aorta, the major blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. There are two types of aortic aneurysms: abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms. Abdominal aortic aneurysm refers to swelling on the part of the aorta that passes through the abdomen. The latter is a swelling that occurs along the aorta that passes through the thoracic cavity. While we don’t know the specific reasons that cause aortic aneurysms, factors could include artery inflammation, narrowed arteries, inherited conditions, injury to the aorta, or even syphilis. Depending on the patient’s condition, treatment for aortic aneurysm could include open-aneurysm repair or endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). For instance, an open aneurysm is necessary if an aneurysm bursts, while EVAR is performed to fix an aortic aneurysm. Surgery undertaken to repair the thoracic aortic aneurysm is called TVAR or FEVAR. EVAR or TVAR, as the case may be, is performed by inserting a graft using a catheter to reinforce or repair the artery.

Vascular Infections And Complications

Bacteria, fungi, or viruses cause vascular infections. This happens after a vascular surgery where the blood vessels have been replaced, bypassed, or patched. However, in some instances, it could result from a severe urinary tract infection or food poisoning where the infection travels through the bloodstream. Symptoms of vascular infection include fever, muscle ache, chills, pain, sweating, etc. A vascular infection is tested through a blood test, with a CT scan and ultrasound helping to find the location of the infection. Vascular infections are treated using medications and even surgery in some instances.

Stenting

A stent is a tiny tube made of metal mesh, silicone, or a combination of materials, implanted surgically in the arteries, veins, and other body parts to ensure a seamless flow of fluids. It is a part of coronary angioplasty to help oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. Stents are also placed to treat various diseases, including intracranial stenosis, brain aneurysm & tracheobronchial stenosis.

Carotid Artery Disease Management

Carotid Artery Disease is the blockage of arteries that carry oxygenated blood and glucose to the brain. It is caused when the carotid arteries are narrowed due to plaque build-up, and treated through carotid endarterectomy or carotid angioplasty (and stenting), depending on the diagnosis.

Mitral Valve Surgery

Mitral Valve Prolapse is a congenital condition where the mitral valve does not function properly, i.e., the mitral valve flops back into the left atrium. It is relatively harmless but could lead to mitral regurgitation, where the blood leaks the wrong way through the valve. It can be treated through medication or surgery, depending on the diagnosis.
